American and British Spelling Variations

This site includes dictionaries for both American English and British English spelling variations. We also provide variations for Canadian and Australian spelling and vocabulary. Common differences between American and British spelling deals with word suffixes. Words ending with "re" in British English usually end with "er" in American English. Words ending with "nce" in British English usually end with "nse" in American English. British English also borrows more words from other European languages and adopts their spelling. Other common suffix differences:

  • British suffix "re" - American suffix "er"
  • British suffix "nce" - American suffix "nse"
  • British suffix "ise" - American suffix "ize"
  • British suffix "our" - American suffix "or"
Another common spelling difference between American and British English is the "double L". In British English words such as "travelling", "quarrelling", etc. in American English tend to remove the "double L".

Spell checker FAQ

How do I check my spelling?

Paste or type your text and click Check Words. Each misspelled word is highlighted with suggested spellings; pick one, skip it or skip all. It is free and needs no signup.

Is JSpell free?

Yes. The online spell checker is free and needs no account, login or email.

Does JSpell use AI?

No. JSpell checks each word against a dictionary and suggests dictionary spellings. It never writes, rewrites or paraphrases your text, so your writing stays your own.

Can I use a spell checker for school?

JSpell works like a dictionary: it only marks spelling mistakes and suggests correct spellings. Check your teacher's or school's rules, but dictionary tools are usually allowed where AI writing tools are not.

Will using a spell checker get flagged by Turnitin or AI detectors?

JSpell does not generate or rewrite text. It only corrects individual words you choose to fix, so your sentences remain exactly as you wrote them.

Which languages can I check?

English (American, British, Canadian, Australian and US Medical), French, Spanish, German and Italian. Choose the language and, for English, the country from the menus above the text box.

Can I check a whole document?

Yes. Paste up to 100,000 characters at a time, roughly 15,000 words. For longer documents, check them in parts.

Is my text private?

No account is needed. Your text is sent over an encrypted connection, checked and then discarded: it is not stored, logged or used to train AI.

Does it help if English is not my first language?

Yes. JSpell shows the correct dictionary spelling of each misspelled word so you can learn it, without rewriting your sentences the way AI tools do. Choose American, British, Canadian or Australian English to match your course or audience.

What are the most commonly misspelled English words?

Words such as accommodate, definitely, necessary, occurred, separate and receive. JSpell flags misspellings like accomodate, definately, neccessary, occured, seperate and recieve and suggests the correct word first.

Is there a medical spell checker?

Yes. The US Medical dictionary adds more than 50,000 medical terms, including current FDA drug names and ICD-10-CM diagnosis terms. Use the Medical Spell Checker page or choose US Medical from the country menu.

How can I add spell checking to my website or app?

Use the JSpell spell check API (a JSON web API), the Java SDK, or JSpell HTML and Evolution for web forms. See the Software and API pages on jspell.com.
